How much does a website cost in New Zealand?

What you're actually paying for, what pushes the price up or down, and how to budget for launch and the year after.

By Adriaana Zareian3 min read

It's usually the first question anyone asks, and the honest answer is that it depends. But "it depends" isn't much help when you're trying to set a budget, so here's what actually changes the price of a small business website in New Zealand, and what you should expect to get for your money.

What you're paying for

A website isn't one thing. When you pay a designer, you're paying for a handful of separate pieces of work that happen to end up on the same screen:

  • Thinking. Working out who the site is for, what they need to find and what you want them to do: book, buy, call or enquire.
  • Structure. Deciding which pages you need and how they connect, so people (and Google) can find their way around.
  • Design. How it looks on a laptop and on a phone, and whether it feels like your business.
  • Words. Writing or editing the copy so it's clear, persuasive and written for search.
  • Build and setup. Booking systems, forms, online payments, email, analytics and everything that has to work behind the scenes.
  • SEO. Page titles, descriptions, structured data and a sitemap, so Google understands what you do and where.
  • Care after launch. Training, plus an ongoing care plan so the site stays current and keeps performing.

A cheap website usually skips some of these. That's fine if you know which ones and why. It's a problem if you find out after launch.

What changes the price

Number of pages

Most small businesses need between five and ten pages: home, services, about, contact, and a page or two for whatever matters most to your customers. Every extra page means more design, more words and more testing.

Selling online

An online store is a bigger job than a brochure site. Products need setting up, shipping and payments need configuring, and checkout needs testing properly. Expect ecommerce to sit at a higher price point than a standard website.

Bookings and integrations

Connecting a booking system, a membership platform or an email marketing tool adds time, but it's often the part of the site that pays for itself fastest.

Copy

If you write your own words and a designer edits them, it costs less than having everything written from scratch. Either way, budget time for it. Waiting on copy is the most common reason website projects run late.

Brand

If you don't have a logo, colours and a clear visual style, that work has to happen before (or alongside) the website. Doing both together usually costs less than doing them separately, and the result is far more consistent.

Typical ranges in New Zealand

Prices vary a lot between providers, but broadly:

  • Doing it yourself on a template costs little upfront but a lot of your time, and the result often looks like a template.
  • A freelance designer or small studio will typically cost a few thousand dollars for a custom small business site, more for ecommerce.
  • A larger agency often starts in the tens of thousands, with more people, more meetings and more process.

Whoever you work with, ask for a fixed quote that lists exactly what's included. That's how A—Z works: every project is quoted in full on your brief before anything starts.

Don't forget the running costs

After launch, you'll have a few ongoing costs:

  • Your platform or hosting plan, usually paid monthly or yearly.
  • Your domain name, renewed every year.
  • Apps or integrations, such as booking or email tools.
  • Updates and care, either your own time or a monthly care plan.

How to budget well

Start with what the website needs to do for your business, not what it should look like. If most of your customers find you on Google and book on their phone, your budget should go into mobile design, booking and SEO before anything decorative. Then ask for a fixed quote that lists exactly what's included, so you can compare like with like.

Planning a new website? Send a short brief and you'll get a clear, fixed quote back. Or read what to prepare before a website project.
